British racing driver Josh Hill secured a podium finish in the opening round of the Formula Renault Northern European Cup in Hockenheim this weekend.
The MSA Team UK driver had a strong showing in Friday’s test sessions –posting the fourth fastest time in both –and was confident of a good qualifying position on Saturday. However, luck wasn’t to be with Hill and in quali one he ended up being first across the line for his run and with the track drying throughout the session ended up being bumped down to P7. In quali two the Fortec Motorsports driver faced more bad luck with bad traffic hindering his fastest lap, which would have put him P2 but ended up leaving him in P8.
Race one on Saturday saw Hill line up in seventh place. Making a flying start, Hill was up to P5 by the end oflap one. After five laps Hill was running in P4 and challenging for the podium when he was hit by Gasly and sustained damage to his car which forced him to retire from the race. With the finishing positions of race one determining the starting grid for race three it meant Hill would face a P38 start.
On Sunday Hill started race two in P8. Making another fantastic start Hill was already up to p4 by the end of lap one and P3 by the end of lap two. In the closing stages of the race the safety car was brought out and the field was bunched up.
