Rain wetted the track at Genk in the night and on Friday morning, but it stopped some time before the KZ2 Qualifying. The asphalt was very slippery for the first two sessions, so a good performance was 2″ faster in the last session. The gap was significantly more than 101%, so the ranking didn’t use the times, but the positions in the three groups.
Group 1: The Swedish driver from the PDB team Victor Öberg (Gillard / TM) was ahead of the regular competitors in the first session by posting a series of fastest laps ending with 1’04” 656, or 0.220” faster than the Dutch driver Menno Paauwe (Birel / TM) and 0.418” faster than the Italian Riccardo Negro (DR / TM), one of the two title contenders, who made a sharp improvement in the last two laps.
Group 2: strangely slower than Group 1, the Croatian Kristijan Habulin (CRG / Modena) was fastest with a time of 1’04” 853, one-tenth ahead of the Norwegian Finn Erik Rismyrh (DR / TM) and more four tenths ahead of the Spaniard Jorge Pescador (Tony Kart / Vortex). Felice Tiene (CRG / Maxter) didn’t complete a lap before he retired with a mechanical problem.
Group 3: Times continued to improve in this session, especially for those who anticipated a good set-up. This is what happened for the Belgian Kenny Charles (Merlin / TM) who took the opportunity to take the overall pole of the class with 1’02” 650, four seconds faster than the other leader. Brice De Gaye (CRG / Maxter) set the second fastest time, 0.381” back, making him the fastest of the French drivers, while the Dutch driver Maks Van Meever (Lenzo / TM) finished third.
