Max Defourny has changed a lot during off-season. He has grown, he is more self-confident and he is now a mature 14-year old young man: this was the driver seen in the paddock of the WSK Master Series at La Conca, on the first round of a 2013 season that could be critical for the Belgian driver’s career. On the track, Max showed new determination and self-assurance, attacking without a hint of hesitation the group of the leaders in the KFJ, behind the wheel of his Kosmic/TM.
A small carburettor problem during timed qualifying did not enable him to be as effective as in the previous week’s collective tests, but Max managed to reach the head of the timesheets in the qualifying heats with a 5th and a 3rd place. A collision in the last heat slowed his progression, but he took the 16th place anyway before the final phases.
He further increased his pace in the pre-final, where he took the second place by setting faster times that the drivers in the lead pack. Super-motivated and with a top-performing kart, Max moved to 8th place for the final and then quickly climbed up to 3rd, and then to 2nd place. He kept this enviable position for over 10 laps, but then he had to give way to an opponent just when the finish line was in sight because his chassis had lost a bit of effectiveness. A final third place would have been a well-deserved result, but a violent attack from another driver sent him into a spin on the last lap and he lost 5 places.
Though Max was disappointed for missing a WSK podium he deserved, he is still very confident for the rest of the season and he is aware of his strong potential, which he has also shown at La Conca.
