On this occasion, we are not going to talk about the many cameras used since season debut by CIK to improve the course of international kart races.
Not at all. Indeed, this is just a short résumé of some information published by the international press about the use of surveillance cameras in the United Kingdom, a pioneer in this field that can be seen as a reference point for what could soon happen in our country.
Great Britain has invested huge sums of money (billions) to equip the country with video cameras: currently the ratio is 1 for each 14 inhabitants. In a recent report, however , Scotland Yard has admitted that they are not worth the expenditure. Only 3% of the thefts committed in London have been solved thanks to the use of this system. A security expert from America has reaffirmed that the ineffectiveness of cameras is constantly demonstrated. The dissuasive effect is reportedly very low.
Why? There are often serious technical problems that prevent their sustainable use. Criminals become aware of the presence of cameras and avoid them. Moreover, human resources to process all recorded images are not sufficient, which is normal, since one of the goals of the system has been that of reducing labour costs.
The supporters of Big Brother reply by bringing the country on the verge of over equipment, through the use of “intelligent” cameras endowed with ears and neurons. More efficient then first generation cameras, they will also be much more expensive.
Indeed, this huge High Tech equipment will only enable to catch some “innocent” people, or to boost trade. Only trained and equipped professionals would be in a position to lower the criminal rate with their presence on the ground.
If we look too much in just one direction, we run the risk of generating perverse devastating effects and neglecting the essential.
Now it’s your turn to make up your mind about it.
