A Formula 1 driver for nine years, and World Vice-Champion in 2008 with Ferrari, the Brazilian Felipe Massa accepted the task of taking over from Sheikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa as President of the CIK-FIA at the age of 37.

"I think 2018 has been a good year for international karting. Entries at the FIA ??Karting Competitions improved with a good boost to the OK category in particular. In this respect, the FIA ??Karting World Championship - OK and Junior held in Kristianstad was very successful. The Races also revealed new talents at the European Championships.

I extend my congratulations to the 2018 Champions. With the exception of Jorrit Pex, new names have enriched the FIA ??Karting results tables in 2018, which is a good indicator of the dynamism of our discipline.

I had the opportunity to attend several important Competitions this year. It was essential for me to take the measure of Karting in the field during many conversations with the main players. I competed in Karting in my early days, in Brazil first, then in Europe, but it's been a long time now. I needed to judge for myself how the sport has developed to this day. It is not an easy task to understand all the issues of this sport.

I appreciated the overall quality of the organisation. The World Championships in Genk (BEL) and Kristianstad (SWE) were very successful in this respect. The organisers and the Promoter RGMMC Group have done a great job and the Races were also exciting to watch.

I was able to form my own opinions and consider some directions to further develop Karting in the future. I am aware that changes cannot take place in a few months, but we all need to work in the same direction for the sake of Karting. Competition needs to be accessible to more Drivers through more controlled budgets, while Karting needs to expand its reach around the world.

I wish all the practitioners of this great sport an even more exciting 2019 season and I count on the energies of everyone to help it grow in the years to come."
