A shower wetted the track at Varennes half an hour before the start of race two, just to add some excitement to a competition which was not lacking it. For example, the unfortunate Paolo Besancenez couldn’t take advantage of his good 6th position in race 1: the air box, bought at the circuit to replace a previous one that had been damaged in a collision, was not in compliance with the KF3 rules …
The sun and wind dried the track before the drivers went onto the starting grid. But there was another shower 5 minutes before the start, while all the karts were ready to go out on slicks. The formation lap was launched, however. George Russell started impeccably from the line, while Dorian Boccolacci seemed slightly hesitant. The first dramatic scene was when Russell went off at the first corner, Santino Ferrucci was leading, soon followed by Boccolacci. Valentin Naud fell by the wayside.
The second drama was when, on lap 2, Robert Shwarzman optimistically attacked Boccolacci, his teammate, who dropped to 24th place. Meanwhile, Alex Palou challenged Ferrucci for the lead. The Briton Alex Gill was in third position ahead of Nathan Aston, Amaury Bonduel and Dionisos Marcu. Ferrucci was attacked at the turn by the campsite, Palou moved to the lead while the American dropped to 7th. At halfway Paolo Besancenez, who started last, was already back to 14th position, but fell back again. Boccolacci undid some of his delay, his was now 14th, but Russell didn’t move up from 30th. Palou remained under threat from Gill who was 2/10 off, 5/10 ahead of Aston and Marcu by 1 tenth. The Romanian attacked Aston to gain 3rd before moving to second on the penultimate lap. He was also able to attack Palou, but he managed to control the situation to the end.
It was Spain’s victory for the amazing Alex Palou, from Dionisos Marcu and Alex Gill, who is little known on the continent. Aston finished fourth, Ferrucci 5th, Ticktum 6th and fastest, Bonduel seventh, Moilanen eighth, Cobian 9th and Stroll 10th. Boccolacci gained 13 places to 11th position.
