One felt that the final victory in Rotax DD2 Masters would be between the Canadian Scott Campbell and the Dutchman Dennis Kroes. That’s what happened. Kroes started better than his rival, while a slowdown occurred at the hairpin. Campbell slipped back somewhat, but four drivers lost the opportunity to get on the podium: American Jim Busby Jr., Briton David Griffiths, Hungarian and Greek Gerry Hargitai and Stoyan Gosevits.
After overtaking, the French driver Stephane Picque soon found himself in third place behind Sweden’s Martin Victorsson. But both drivers would have no answer to the threat of Campbell. Unleashed, the Canadian leader was into his stride, while Picque overtook Victorsson. In many laps the positions didn’t change, with everyone trying to put pressure on his direct rival.
At the end of the race, Kroes succeeded in regaining the lead but could not prevent Campbell repassing skillfully on the last lap to win. Behind, Picque ceded to his rival and the Swede narrowly to get on the podium. Again, we had a superb final, which the Motors TV cameramen must have enjoyed!
The winner of the category in 2009 in Egypt, the Swedish Jesus Perez Santander was fifth with a big lead over the duo of Johnny Van der Sanden (Netherlands) and Germany’s Thomas Piert. Despite his incident in the pre-final, French driver Guillaume Berteaux was well up into 8th position.
