With his second title of European Champion in KZ2 Fabian Federer got a new confirmation of his talent at international level after a career dedicated to 125cc gearbox. Long faithful to the CRG chassis, this year he raced with the team SRP Racing with a Modena engine.
Fabian, when did you start in KZ2?
– It’s been a long time! I won my first major victory in 2007 at Lonato. Then I won my first European Championship in 2011 already driving a CRG. I then continued to race in international competition, however I have not always had the expected success. I was quick, I got victories, but it’s hard to win a title, the standard is very high in KZ2.
How did your 2016 European campaign go?
In the past, the European KZ2 Championship was held as a single event. You had to be on it at the right time and not have problems. Now, the title is decided over several events, the strategy is different. This year, we had three meetings on the schedule. I started with a very good 2nd position at Essay (FRA) and I managed to win at Adria (ITA) in really difficult conditions due to the constant changes of grip. This is where I made the difference. My opponents were not as consistent. In the last meeting, in Genk (BEL), I was in the top three after the heats. My sparkplug broke in the Prefinal and I had to retire, which deprived me of qualification for the Final. The situation was strange, but not catastrophic: thanks to the dropped scores, I was crowned with a comfortable lead.
What is your future as a driver?
As I said, I have always raced in KZ2. I had a fantastic season with the conquest of a second European Championship and 2nd place in the International Super Cup in Sweden. I am always passionate and I would like to continue, but now I don’t know exactly what I will do next year.
