Last weekend Sean Gelael competed at the last round of the WSK Master Series, in Italy, on his first time on the track of Viterbo. Due to a combination of unfortunate circumstances, the final result was not up to the team’s expectations, but the Indonesian driver showed a remarkable level of performance against a group of very determined opponents. Throughout the series of European competitions, Sean Gelael has continued to step up the pace with panache.
First of all, the most remarkable element that emerges from an assessment of the meeting performance is the speed of this Sean GP driver. Without ever failing, he was capable of exploiting at best the potential of his FA Kart/Vortex, prepared with the utmost care in even the smallest detail. He was always very near the group of the fastest drivers, often driving as fast as the leaders. This weekend, he was definitely the strong man of the team and in that he was very much helped by his kart set up. During the races he showed a growing ability to climb through the pack with great self-assurance.
After an interesting 8th time in timed qualifying, Sean started the qualifications with an encouraging 11th place before showing up in the second heat. He made a fantastic start and remained in the top 5 up to the finish line. Unfortunately he was disqualified for not meeting the regulatory minimum weight, a regrettable human error made by a technician of his team. His last heat was interrupted soon after the start by a crash that forced him to retire.
Starting from the 13th row in the pre-final, Sean fought like a lion to climb up to a better place, opening a gap over 14 drivers, and then, on the last lap, he performed a fantastic pass on Sam Mac Leod while braking. However, it was this same Mac Leod that stopped him in the final for an inconsiderate manoeuvre on the first lap. Both the kart and the driver were hit during the attack and his race stopped there.
Definitely disappointed by such a conclusion of the WSK, Sean was anyway satisfied with his performances, especially now that he knows how to combine equipment setup, speed and race management. His next race will be at the end of October on the Lonato track, for the Bridgestone Cup.
