After a season dedicated learning about cars last year, in 2018 Charles Milesi has begun a full campaign in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. He prepared first in New Zealand in the Castrol Toyota Racing Series, which did not fully meet his expectations but in the Eurocup collective tests Charles performed well with his R-ace GP team. The first two events of the European FR 2.0 season have not yet brought him the expected results, but the young Frenchman is refining his plan of attack while in 7th out of the rookies in the discipline.
Alongside his racing programme, Charles Milesi relies on the Simumotion organisation of Julien Abelli and Alexis Landais to reinforce his potential between events and to manage the progress of the races. The 17-year-old French driver was already in great form in the three official Eurocup rounds of collective testing in 2018 and was often in 5th to 10th position.
The Eurocup began in mid-April at Paul Ricard with 27 drivers, 13 rookies and 14 repeaters within eight experienced teams. At one of the winning teams in 2017, R-ace GP, Charles has Max Fewtrell, Victor Martins and Logan Sargeant as team-mates. He started 12th in both Qualifying sessions and was in the top 10 in 9th position in Race 1, while maintaining his position in the 2nd race.
A week later, Monza’s fast Italian track hosted the second event. Fast in free practice, Charles was 10th in the first Qualifying session and still gained three places in Race 1 to finish 7th. The management of the second Qualifying session proved to be more complicated, and he had to settle for 15th place on the starting grid of Race 2. He then embarked on an impressive comeback to the top 10 in 8th place, but a crash after a mistake from a rival reduced his efforts to nothing.
“I’m not really happy with my FR 2.0 start,” explained Charles.“I have not yet found my level of performance from the collective tests. I know that I have to work more with my team to be more effective in Qualifying, which, until now, have penalised me in the race. We will do everything we can to fix it soon in order to tackle future competitions in better conditions.“
Charles is currently in 14th place of the Eurocup, 7th of the rookies.
