In contrast to what his dominance in the heats could suggest, Ben Barnicoat (ART GP / TM) was unable to resist the pack of rampaging opponents in the first Prefinal at Alcaniz. Although he made a good start, the British conceded first to repeated attacks by the Croatian Martin Kodric (FA Kart / Vortex) and then the return of the unstoppable Max Verstappen (CRG / TM) from sixth. Dorian Boccolacci (Energy / TM) was pushing from the first meters of the race as usual so he was not be left behind. He was able to attack Kodric at the end of the race and just took second position. Lance Stroll (Zanardi / Parilla) took advantage skilfully to return to third after an early race in the leading group, followed by his teammate Tom Joyner (Zanardi / Parilla). Felice Tiene (CRG / Parilla) was well on his way to target the top three when he hooked up with Barnicoat, which cost them both a lot of places: the English driver finished 10th, with the fastest lap, and the Italian 15th.
