The final start in KZ1 was confused and Marco Ardigo was caught up a little after attacking Bas Lammers, so Ardigo was down in the pack and spun at the first corner. Rick Dreezen took the lead ahead of Ben Hanley and Zdenek Groman, while Jonathan Thonon wasted time. Joey Hanssen took third followed by Lammers and Thonon. Simone Brenna was seventh, Sauro Cesetti was 8th and Gianni Gazzurelli 9th.
Hanssen was passed, as Thonon, the fastest on the track took third with Lammers in his wake. Hanley attacked and took the lead from Dreezen on lap three, but the Belgian repassed. Meanwhile, Lammers took Thonon and approached Hanley setting the fastest time. Dreezen got away unsurmountably, unless Lammers, in second, could gain back 1.7s. On lap 10, Thonon attacked Hanley under braking to take 3rd position.
Lammers was less than five tenths from Dreezen, and was able to attack before the end. Groman managed to pass Hanley. Dreezen took a lot of risks to hold off Lammers who put him under a lot of pressure. But Groman took Hanssen was 4th in front of Hanley. Dreezen managed the situation admirably, but Lammers attacked and both drivers slid off. Lammers was now in the lead. But the Dutch champion didn’t want to win this way and very sportingly, as well intelligently, let Dreezen past and also took a better line. Thonon was on the third step of the podium in front of Hanssen, De Conto and Hanley.
